Tavi Gevinson, the world famous blogger who began blogging at the age of 11, launched a digital magazine called RookieMag in September 2011. The aim was creating a website for teenagers, made by teenagers (they also add: "we have semi-qualified adults standing by to answer your – yes, YOUR – questions".
I've been visiting RookieMag for a long time, and I decided I had to make a post about it because no one should miss this goldmine. You'll find articles by great collaborators and columnists, useful guides, tips, playlists, original style guides... The language they use is extremely fun and down to earth. RookieMag is like the perfect magazine any teenager would love to read under the covers (with a flashlight), and her parents would read it too when no one were looking.
Thanks to Tavi's fame, and all the people she has gotten to know because all the media and brand's attention she received, she has the privilege of having contributors such as Elle Fanning, Chloë Sevigny, the Rodarte sisters, or the actor Paul Rudd. Lucky her! :) So if you are a teenager, have a look at the site, you'll love it. And if you're an adult, show your inner Peter Pan and enjoy Rookie's world.
15 reasons to love RookieMag
- They interview the most awesome and unexpected people, such as Sally Draper (well, the person interviewed is Kiernan Shipka, who portrays Don and Betty Draper's daughter in Mad Men), Elle Fanning, Chloe Sevigny...
- They have the best collaborators, and they make for Rookie Mag really interesting articles. For example, a guide to Buffy the Vampire Slayer by the Rodarte sisters.
- Paul Rudd answers important questions on a video for their section "Ask a Grown Man".
- It's not just fashion, you have book recommendations too, classified as "stuff to read under the covers, with a flashlight".
- And when it's about fashion, they talk about clothes in the most catchy and witty way. Don't miss the post about how to dress like a glam-rock groupie.
- They make cute collages, like those we could have on our school folder.
- Each month has a theme, just like a magazine. This month it's "Obsessions", and some of the previous themes have been: "Up all night", "Girl gangs", and "Secrets".
- They published an article about the Pink Ladies from Grease. That is rad (an expression Rookies love).
- They are honest. Rookie Mag is for teenagers, made by teenagers. They are not selling anything. They talk about things that really interest teenagers, such as "How to approach the person you like without throwing up", "How not to care what other people think of you", "A procrastinator's guide to get an A", "How to be home alone" (eat junk and watch rubbish, go go through everyone else's private stuff, avoid the basement, and many others.
- On the homepage they announce the headline of the next article they're publishing. That makes you look forward to it!
- Their icons and it-girls are real, in some way. They admire Effy Stonem from Skins, Ghost World, Margot Tenembaum, and create playlists based on those characters. The icon is not a model with flawless skin, the most expensive clothes and skinny legs, it's just a girl like them.
- You'll find the most useful guides, such as "How to run a movie marathon" (they suggest you start with Johnny Depp films not directed by Tim Burton), "How to throw a party when you're broke", "How to make your room look like a movie"
- You seem to travel in time to 1990 when you are on the website.
- Their language is so fresh and youthful, without all the conventionalities and clichés we are used to. This headline is too good: "Games That Make You Say, “Oh Hell It’s 5 AM?!?!?” Please don’t tell your parents that we are encouraging you to stay up late playing Mario Kart". For example, there is a guide on how to dress for a party, and they underline the fact that there won't be "any mention of your body shape or your style personality".
- They created the expression golluming out on the couch, which means turning into Gollum from The Lord of the Rings after spending too much time watching movies on the couch.
/// Iba a traducir todo al español, pero al hablar de un sitio web que está en inglés, con enlaces a artículos en inglés, y juegos de palabras en inglés, no le veía mucho el sentido///
