The Help: Women and clothes

I attended The Help premiere in Madrid in the Disney headquarters a few days ago (I was so excited, I thought they would be like Disneyland, but the decoration is very austere). The movie is based on the book by Kathryn Stockett and tells the story of the american maids in the 60's. The film is fun, sad, and moving at the same time. The script is really well written and the actresses are great. Emma Stone has shown that she's not just another Lindsay Lohan, and Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer's acting is outstanding (they portray the maids).

The costume design was one of the things that caught my eye. The whole look and aesthetic of the film is bright, cheerful, incredibly colourful. Sharen Davis, costume designer of the movie, actually made all of the dresses you seen in the film, inspired by the clothes in vintage Vogues, but having in mind that the characters were hyper-traditional housewives. It's the same decade of Mad Men, but these ladies from Mississippi dress very differently. Bold colours, prints, full skirts... My favourite character is Cecilia Foote (Jessica Chastain), who had to gain weight for the film. Her style was tacky, but fun and risky, nothing to do with her "friend's" looks. On the other hand, the Emma Stone's character, the main star, was a tomboy forced to wear feminine clothes. The mix is quite curious.

In cinemas October 28th in Spain. I highly recommend it. It's probably the best film I've seen in the last months.

Hace unos días tuve el placer de asistir al preestreno de "The Help" en Madrid, en las oficinas de Disney (me hacía muchísima ilusión, creía que iban a ser como Disneyland, pero son muy sencillas y sin apenas decoración). La película, basada en la novela de Kathryn Stockett best-seller en Estados Unidos, cuenta la historia de las criadas en América en los años 60. Es divertida, triste, y conmovedora a la vez. El guión es muy bueno, y las actrices hacen un trabajo impresionante. Emma Stone ha demostrado que no es otra Lindsay Lohan, y Viola Davis y Octavia Spencer, que interpretan a las sirvientas, están de Oscar.

El diseño de vestuario fue una de las cosas que llamaron mi atención. Sharen Davis, la diseñadora de vestuario, hizo todos y cada uno de los vestidos que ves en la película, inspirándose en la ropa de Vogues vintage, y teniendo en mente que los personajes eran amas de casa ultratradicionales. Es la misma década de Mad Men, pero no tiene nada ver, las mujeres de Mississippi vestían totalmente diferente. Colores llamativos, estampados florales, faldas con vuelo... Mi personaje favorito es Cecilia Foote, interpretado por Jessica Chastain, que tuvo que engordar para el papel. Su look tiene un punto horterilla, pero es divertido y arriesgado, sin nada que ver con el estilo de sus "amigas". Por otra parte, el personaje de Emma Stone, la protagonista, es más tomboy y se ve obligada a vestir ropa femenina que odia. Una mezcla muy curiosa.

Se estrenará en España el 28 de octubre bajo el título "Criadas y señoras". Os la recomiendo de verdad, es la mejor película que he visto en el cine desde hace varios meses.
