How to make it in America is a tv series produced by Mark Wahlberg (who also produced Entourage) about two twentysomethings, Ben and Cam, who try to make their way in the fashion business in NY with their clothing label called Crisp. The first episode was aired in 2010 by HBO, and the second season started two weeks ago. I began watching it this summer. Of course, I love it.

The ambient is great, they are young, there's a party on every episode, the characters are fun, but above all things, it's realistic. Things don't come out well at the first time. There's not twisted plots about a missing brother, or people getting pregnant. The photography direction is modern, dynamic, they dress well (a mix between Urban Outfitters,  DC, American Apparel and Adidas). The actors are great (Bryan Greenberg, Lake Bell, Luis Guzmán...), and there are always interesting cameos like Leigh Lezark, Isaac Mizrahi, John Varvatos...

10 reasons to watch How to make it in America

1. It's a real story about trying to succeed in the fashion business. Unlike Gossip Girl, where they get internships at W with a phone call, things are quite difficult for Cam and Ben. Their bad luck makes them miss important deals, and Cam's gangster uncle is always there to spoil their plans. It's a realistic portray. It's not all glamour and champagne in the fashion world. They want to succeed and make money, not be famous.

2. Bryan Greenberg. He's a quite good actor, I saw him in Prime with Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep, in Bride Wars, and more recently in Friends with benefits as Mila Kunis's boyfriend. He's great in How to make it in America, he plays Ben, and he always has that "everything is gonna be awful" expression, and though he has really good ideas, there's always something that doesn't let his dreams come true.

3. The Ben and Cam duo. Ben is the main star, the designer, he's really down to Earth. He doesn't like to take risks, but he pursues his dreams no matter what. He's cute and everyone loves him, but he's very shy. On the other hand, Cam, played by Victor Rasuk, is the one that falls asleep and misses the important meetings, gets all the girls, the street was his school, and has to deal with his family that always put him in trouble.

4. Lake Bell. She always does the part of the "best friend of the main star" on most films, such as What happens in Vegas, No strings attached... She's incredibly funny, I love her! She portrays Ben's ex-girlfriend, Rachel, the girl that will always be on Ben's heart. She works as a home decorator, but she doesn't like her job and would like to do charity work. She's a very good example of the typical young woman that sees her dreams fade and is confused about her career.

5. Fashion. But not the fashion you see in Gossip Girl or Sex and the City. The real fashion industry. How is it to work as a shop assistant at Barney's while trying to create your own label, how difficult it is to show your work to people that will help you (salers, representatives, agents)... Fashion is very present on the show. They'll talk about Nylon magazine, meet John Varvatos, Isaac Mizrahi, Leigh Lezark...

6. The soundtrack. It's modern and original. The opening song is I need a dollar by Aloe Blacc, which is a very good choice, as they are always short on money. You'll hear Big in Japan by Martin Solveig, Deceptacon by Le Tigre, Levels by Avicii...

7. Ben and Cam's friends. Like Domingo, a very cool character played by Kid Cudi, Cam's uncle played by Luis Guzmán (his part is very funny, he's trying to sell Rasta Monsta, an energetic beverage, and is always in Cam's way)...

8. The parties. It's like The Cobra Snake on a TV series. Lots of hipsters, famous people... They know the it-pubs and restaurants (so happy when they went to La Esquina, a mexican restaurant where I had lunch when I was in NY last year).

9. Their sense of humour. It's not the easy jokes on How I met your mother (I love that series too, though!). They are witty and funny, with a piece of drama.

10. That in the end, in spite of recession, gun shootings at pop-up shows, or a whole collection that gets stolen and burnt by the gangsters of your aunt, it's optimistic. If you fight, you'll make it!

How to make it in America (Buscarse la vida en América) es una serie de televisión producida por el actor Mark Wahlberg (productor también de Entourage) sobre dos veinteañeros, Ben y Cam, que intentan crear una marca de ropa llamada Crisp en Nueva York. El primer episodio se emitió en 2010 por HBO, y hace dos semanas empezó la segunda temporada. Empecé a verla antes del verano, tiempo después de que Raquel y Di la recomendaran en el blog. Por supuesto, me encanta.

El ambiente es genial, son jóvenes, en cada capítulo hay una fiesta, los personajes son divertidos, pero por encima de todo, es realista. Las cosas no les salen bien a la primera (ni a la segunda, ni a la octava). No hay argumentos retorcidos de hermanos secretos, o gente que se queda embarazada. La dirección de fotografía es moderna y dinámica, visten bien (una mezcla entre Urban Outfitters, DC, American Apparel y Adidas). Los actores son muy buenos (Bryan Greenberg, Lake Bell, Luis Guzmán...), y suele haber apariciones estelares, como Leigh Lezark, Isaac Mizrahi, John Varvatos...

10 razones para ver How to make it in America

1. Es una historia real sobre cómo triunfar en el negocio de la moda. A diferencia de Gossip Girl, donde consiguen trabajar en la revista W con una llamada de teléfono, las cosas son difíciles para Cam y Ben, Su mala suerte les hace perder negocios importantes, y el tío gangster de Cam siempre está ahí para estropear sus planes. Es un retrato realista. No todo es glamour y champagne en el mundo de la moda. Quieren triunfar y ganar dinero, pero no por la fama.

2. Bryan Greenberg. Es un actor bastant bueno. Lo vi en Secretos Compartidos con Uma Thurman y Meryl Streep, en Guerra de Novias, y hace poco en Con derecho a roce como el novio de Mila Kunis. En How to make it in America está genial, tiene siempre esa expresión de "todo va a salir mal" en su cara, y aunque tiene muy buenas ideas, no hay ocasión en la que no suceda algo que evita que sus planes se cumplan.

3. El dúo Ben y Cam. Ben es el protagonista principal, el diseñador, el que tiene los pies en la tierra. No le gusta arriesgar, aunque persigue sus sueños con perseverancia. Es guapo y cae bien a todo el mundo, pero es tímido. Por otro lado está Cam, el que se queda dormido y llega tarde a las reuniones importantes, consigue a todas las chicas, es el amo de la calle, y tiene que lidiar con su familia que siempre acaba metiéndole en problemas.

4. Lake Bell. Esta actriz siempre intepreta a "la mejor amiga de la protagonista" en la mayoría de las películas, como en Algo pasa en Las Vegas, o Sin Compromiso. Es muy divertida. ¡me encanta! Hace de la ex-novia de Ben, Rachel, de la que sigue enamorado Ben, y al que aún quiere. Trabaja como decoradora de interiores, pero lo que realmente quiere es hacer labores humanitarias en el extranjero. Es un buen ejemplo de la típica mujer joven que ve que sus sueños se van alejando y está confusa acerca de su carrera profesional.

5. La moda. Pero no la moda de Gossip Girl o Sexo en Nueva York. La realidad de la industria de la moda. Cómo es trabajar de dependiente en Barney's mientras intentas lanzar tu propia marca, lo difícil que es mostrar tu trabajo a la gente que te puede ayudar (representantes, vendedores, agentes)... La moda está muy presente en la serie. Hablan de la revista Nylon, conocen a John Varvatos, Isaac Mizrahi, Leigh Lezark...

6. La banda sonora. Es moderna y original. La canción de la introducción es I need a dollar by Aloe Blacc, lo que es una buena elección, porque siempre están cortos de dinero. Escucharéis Big in Japan de Martin Solveig, Deceptacon de Le Tigre, Levels de Avicii...

7. Los amigos de Ben y Cam. Como Domingo, un personaje muy cool interpretado por Kid Cudi, el tío de Cam, interpretado por Luis Guzmán (sus diálogos son geniales. Mientras su sobrino se dedica a la moda él intenta sacar a flote Rasta Monsta, una bebida energética)....

8. Las fiestas. Es como The Cobra Snake, pero en una serie de televisión. Montones de hipsters, famosos... Conocen todos los sitios it de Nueva York (me encantó cuando salió La Esquina, un restaurante mexicano en el que estuve cuando viajé a NY el año pasado).

9. Su sentido del humor. No son las bromas fáciles de Cómo conocí a vuestra madre (ojo, que esa serie también me gusta mucho). Es inteligente y divertido, con un punto de drama.

10. Que en el fondo, a pesar de la crisis, tiroteos en shows pop-up, o colecciones robadas y quemadas por los gangsters de la panda de tu tío, al final las cosas se consiguen. Son optimistas. Si luchas, ¡lo consigues!
