Most commonly used adjectives and expressions in fashion magazines

... or which words shouldn't be written so often

Writing about fashion is not easy. It seems that there is a limited range of words to be used and finding new expressions is a challenge. As I read tons of magazines every month, and all of them almost at the same time (I buy 6 magazines and I read them in two days), sometimes I get the impression that the headtitles and the descriptions are always the same. There is a series of adjectives and expressions that are used over and over. Some of them need to be used, but there are others that hurt my eyes when I read them. Of course, there are many great journalists that write very beautifully.

I've made a list with some of the expressions I often find in the pages of the magazines.

Escribir sobre moda no es fácil. Parece que hay un rango limitado de palabras para usar, y encontrar nuevas expresiones resulta un desafío. Debido a que leo muchas revistas todos los meses, y todas las leo en un par de días, a veces tengo la impresión de que los titulares y las descripciones son siempre los mismos. Hay una serie de adjetivos y expresiones que se repiten una y otra vez a lo largo de las páginas. Algunas no hay más remedio que emplearlas, pero hay otras que me hacen daño a la vista cuando las leo. Por supuesto, también hay grandes periodistas que escriben fantásticamente.

He hecho una lista con las expresiones que más suelo encontrarme en las páginas de las revistas.

Kling's spring

I have a resolution to fulfill in 2011: Go to the Coachella Festival. I've been seeing thousands of photos every day, photos of happy people, in shorts, in beautiful dress, enjoying the sun... Let's see if next year I am the one taking photos there! :)

I was organizing the old magazines and newspapers in my room and I found these pictures. I thought they were adorable, so here I am posting them. They are from the shooting of the Burberry campaign. In the pics you can see Mario Testino, Christopher Bailey, Emma Watson, and the male models.

I quite like Emma Watson, she seems a down to earth girl despite her massive succcess. She's very discrete, and she always smiles in front of the cameras.

Why do editorials that show affordable clothes always look cheap?

When I first saw that picture I thought: "Hey... That dress looks familiar... I see where H&M found the inspiration for The Garden Collection..." But then I read the credits, and it was the H&M dress! The white version. The styling, the model, and the photograph were so good that I would have never guessed it was a 39,90€ dress. And that made me wonder... Why do all editorials that present affordable clothes always look cheap? Don't editors think those clothes are worth buying? There's something about those pictures that can't be explained. I just looks cheap. Oh, and it's annoying when they mix a $1000 Calvin Klein dress with a $30 Zara clutch and say it's a lowcost outfit. That's cheating.

Nevertheless, this Harper's Bazaar Spain May 2010 editorial is the exception (at least most of the outfits portrayed there). Photographed by Nacho Alegre, and the model is Bruna Tenorio. Good work! I hope they make more editorials like this for the next issues.

Cuando vi esta foto pensé: "Uhmm... Este vestido me suena... Ya veo de dónde sacaron la inspiración los de H&M para The Garden Collection..." Pero cuando leí los créditos, vi que se trataba del vestido de H&M! La versión en blanco. El estilismo, la modelo y la fotografía eran tan buenos que nunca se me habría pasado por la cabeza que era un vestido de 39,90€. Y eso me hizo pensar... ¿Por qué las editoriales en las que presentan ropa asequible se ven tan baratas? ¿Es que las editoras no creen que esa ropa merece ser comprada? Hay algo en esas editoriales que no se puede explicar. Simplemente tienen algo de... barato. Además, etiquetan como "lowcost" esas editoriales cuando en realidad lo que hacen es fotografiar un vestido de Calvin Klein de mas de 1.000€ con un bolsito de mano de Zara que cuesta 30€. Eso es trampa.

Esta editorial de Harper's Bazaar España Mayo 2010 es la excepción, al menos la mayoría de las fotografías que la componen. Fotografiado por Nacho Alegre, y la modelo es Bruna Tenorio. Buen trabajo! Espero que publiquen más editoriales como ésta en los próximos números. De momento yo ya he añadido la chaqueta de rayas rojas y blancas de TMX a mi lista.

Dior F/W 2010 Presentation in Madrid

This week's been undoubtedly the presentations week. They mount up, and even though I didn't attend all of them, I saw the editors and stylists carrying the same Hermés and Loewe shopping bags.

Today was Dior's presentation, and I was very excited, as I had never been to a Dior presentation. The collection is a mix of equestrian style, the 20's, but also futuristic and romantic. I love subtle embroideries and glass beads attached to the fabric, and if it's pink crepe, even better. I don't usually wear pink (in fact, I only own a pink t-shirt), but I've fallen in love with light pink dresses more than once.

Here you have some pics I took. The jewellery collection was showcased too, but I'll post those pictures later.

Ésta ha sido sin duda la semana de las presentaciones. Se acumulan, y aunque yo no voy a muchas, veo a las redactoras y estilistas que llegan con bolsas de Hermés y Loewe todas iguales.

Hoy era la de Dior, y como nunca había estado en ninguna presentación de Dior, tenía mucha curiosidad. La colección es una mezcla de estilo ecuestre, años 20, futurista, y romántica. A mí los bordados y las cuentas adornando la tela me suelen encantar, y si son sobre crepe rosa, aún mejor. No soy muy de llevar rosa, de hecho sólo tengo una camiseta de ese color, pero más de una vez me he enamorado de vestidos vaporosos rosas.

Os dejo aquí varias imágenes. También presentaban hoy la colección de joyería, pero lo publicaré otro día.

Yatt Collection

César and Tamara, the creators of one of the most successful young brands in Spain, have created a spring/summer collection that will find a place in my wardrobe very soon. There is no teenager that doesn't know what Yatt is. They first started designing t-shirts, and due to the craze about everything they put on sale, they've decided to produce their first collection, with skirts, jeans, t-shirts, and corsets. César y Tamara, los creadores de una de las firmas jóvenes con más éxito en España, han creado una colección de primavera/verano que pronto tendrá un sitio en mi armario. No hay adolescente que no sepa qué es Yatt. Empezaron vendiendo camisetas, y debido a la locura que desata todo lo que ponen a la venta, han decidido diseñar una colección formada por varios modelos de vaqueros, faldas, camisetas y corsés. Podéis comprar las prendas aquí (los precios son fantásticos).

Simple and elegant outfit

Jade Jagger attended the La Roca Village presentation in a very simple outfit, but her attitude (and the tan!) made her look perfect. I love wearing white in summer.

Loewe F/W 2010 Presentation in Madrid

The Loewe F/W 2010 presentation is one of the best ones I've ever been to. The place was perfect and it had just the proper light to take good pictures. The presentation was held in an "abandoned-looking" place, and the contrast with the elegance and the refinement of the clothes created a very cool effect. The place had been decorated with bright and colourful flowers, giving a beautiful spring touch. I was accompanied by Soraya and Rocío, and that was awesome too. The collection was brilliant, and as always, I took too many photos due to the enourmous amount of things I liked.

La presentación de la colección Otoño/Invierno 2010 de Loewe ha sido una de las mejores en las que he estado. El sitio era perfecto y tenía justo la luz adecuada para hacer buenas fotos. Eligieron un lugar abandonado y reformado, y el contraste con la elegancia y el refinamiento de las prendas creaba un efecto muy bonito. Además, lo habían decorado con flores muy coloridas que daban un toque primaveral precioso. Allí también estaban Soraya y Rocío, por lo que fue aún mejor. La colección es fantástica, y como siempre, he hecho demasiadas fotos debido a la cantidad de detalles y conjuntos que me gustaron.
